The Mega Millions jackpot has been hit four times this year, including once in New Jersey.
Richard Wahl, 47, then of Vernon, won the $533 million jackpot on March 30. Wahl’s ticket is the most valuable ticket sold in New Jersey and was at the time the 10th biggest jackpot in U.S. lottery history.
Wahl chose the cash option worth $324.6 million and received a check for about $220.7 million after state and federal taxes were deducted.
The largest Mega Millions jackpot-winning ticket ever sold — $656 million — was split by ticket holders in Illinois, Kansas and Maryland following the March 30, 2012 drawing.
Just behind that was a $648 million jackpot won in California and Georgia on Dec. 17, 2013.
A 53-year-old Massachusetts hospital worker bought the only jackpot-winning ticket for a $758.7 million Powerball drawing in August 2017.
A Mega Millions ticket costs $2. The odds of a ticket matching five numbers and the Mega Ball are 302,575,350 to 1. It’s a 1 in 12,607,306 shot to win the second prize of at least $1 million by matching five numbers.
Mega Millions is played in 44 states, Washington D.C. and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Drawings are held on Tuesday and Friday.
