Heather Locklear, facing charges of attacking police during a domestic violence incident in February, was hospitalized for a psychiatric evaluation after an incident Sunday in which she attacked her parents and threatened to shoot herself.
A source told TMZ that the 56-year-old former “Melrose Place” star became unhinged during the day, so her parents went to her home in Thousand Oaks. That’s when Locklear “got violent, choking her mother and hitting her father”.
Her mother called 911 to report that Locklear was behaving erratically and looking for a gun to shoot herself, according to audio of the 911 call. Ventura County Fire and Sheriff’s departments responded to Locklear’s home and transported her to the hospital. As of Monday, the incident was listed as only a medical issue, not a criminal matter.
Locklear was arrested Feb. 25 during an alcohol-fueled domestic violence incident involving her live-in boyfriend Chris Heisser. During the incident, she was intoxicated and “extremely uncooperative and physically combative” with sheriff’s deputies, reports said.
Locklear also threatened to shoot deputies if they came back to her home, prompting them to return to her property in early March to search for a .38-caliber pistol registered in her name, a report said. Deputies ultimately did not find the firearm.
In April, her attorneys entered a plea of not guilty on her behalf after she was charged with five misdemeanor counts involving battery on a peace officer and resisting, obstructing or delaying a peace officer.
Locklear has long raised concerns among family and friends about her mental health and reported abuse of alcohol and drugs. Locklear is the mother of 20-year-old model Ava Sambora, her daughter with second husband Richie Sambora.
In the weeks leading up to her arrest, the one-time darling of 1980s and 1990s TV had been struggling with her “inner demons — mainly anxiety and substance abuse,” a source told Page Six.
“She has so much talent and beauty, and we hate to see that wasted,” a family member told Page Six in February. “But she’s fighting a lot of demons.”
Family were especially concerned that she had reportedly allowed Heisser, her one-time high school sweetheart, to move back into her Thousand Oaks home after her arrest.
Their concerns had to do with Locklear’s current legal troubles, along with the fact that she and Heisser both have a history of substance abuse, stints in rehab and run-ins with the law. It’s not known if Heisser was at Locklear’s home Sunday or whether he still lives there.
Locklear’s “inner demons” may have been with her for decades and possibly contributed to her string of troubled relationships with men. She was married for seven years to Motley Crue drummer Tommy Lee before splitting in 1993. She then turned around and wed Bon Jovi guitarist Richie Sambora. They welcomed daughter Ava in 1997, but Locklear abruptly filed for divorce from him in 2006.
She dated a number of Hollywood actors, including David Spade, Mark Harmon and Scott Baio, before settling down for a time with soap actor and singer Jack Wagner. But that relationship ended after the two got into a physical fight in 2011, which prompted police to respond to his home in Los Angeles.
At the time, a law enforcement source tol, “She lost it on (Wagner) and he retaliated.” Neither wanted to press charges against the other.
Over the years, there also have been headlines about Locklear being arrested on suspicion of drunken driving in 2008 and of her reportedly being suicidal that same year. She was hospitalized in 2012 after her sister called 911 and reported that the actress was mixing prescription drugs and alcohol, the Daily Mail said.
Page Six reported that Locklear hooked up with Heisser nearly two years ago. They had dated in high school 40 years ago. But Heisser also has a troubled past. He served two years in prison after being convicted on theft and fraud charges in Riverside in 2011, Page Six said.
