Is Columbus Day a state and federal holiday?
Monday, Oct. 9, 2017, is Columbus Day, which is a state and federal holiday. The holiday started in 1792 as an Italian-American heritage celebration in New York. The day was declared a federal holiday in 1937 by President Franklin D. Roosevelt.
In Hawaii, the second Monday in October is known as Discoverers’ Day rather than Columbus Day and it is not a state holiday. Until 1971, the holiday was observed on Oct. 12 every year.
Is there mail delivery? Is the post office open?
There will be no mail delivered on Monday. UPS and FedEx will be making deliveries that day though. Post offices will be closed, though self-service kiosks are still available in some locations for drop-offs.
Are the stock markets open?
The financial and stock markets will be open Monday. Whille the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq typically follow the federal holiday schedule, Columbus Day and Veteran’s Day are the exceptions when the markets remain open.
Can I renew my driver’s license on Columbus Day?
New Jersey state offices and courts are closed, as well as Motor Vehicle Commission locations.

Are banks closed for Columbus Day?
Banks may close for the holiday. Chase, TD Bank and Wells Fargo have announced they will be open. Bank of America, Santander, and PNC Bank, however, are closed. Check with your local branch before heading out.

PATH trains will operate on a normal weekday schedule. SEPTA will run on a modified weekday schedule.

Yes, most restaurants and food stores should be open on Columbus Day. However, make sure to check hours in case they are affected by the holiday.
Are stores and malls open?
Most malls will also be open on Columbus Day. The following are some of those malls in case you’re thinking of doing some holiday shopping:
